It's a full harvest moon tonight so I thought today's nursery rhyme should be Hey Diddle, Diddle. I always liked this rhyme, because it's just plain nonsense. And a kid, nonsense was the best kind of sense. Grown-ups had boring logic and us kids, we had nonsense. Of course cows could jump over the moon. Just like little girls could climb into mirror worlds and stuffed animals could talk. It was a given that fantasy could be true even if it was only in our imaginations. I think adults would be better off if they played pretend on occasion. When you can imagine that fantasy is a possible, a whole new realm of real-life possibilities opens to you. Enjoy the treasury! :)
Hey diddle diddle,
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon,
The little dog laughed to see such sport,
And the dish ran away with the spoon. Also make sure you check out the
big treasury that matches this one!
Have a great day! :)
Thank you Jennie!
ReplyDeleteYou're very welcome! :)
ReplyDeleteDid you ever read Tolkien's "The Cat and the Fiddle: A Nursery-Rhyme Undone and its Scandalous Secret Unlocked"? It purports to tell the story behind the nursery rhyme, and you can find in The Fellowship of the Ring (it's a poem).
ReplyDeleteNo, but that sounds really cool! I'll have to look it up. Thanks for the tip. :)
