The Month of the Pearl

This month's birthstone is the pearl. Pearls are unique in the world of birthstones as they are not actually a stone. Pearls are actually calcium carbonate that a mollusk (like the oyster) wraps around a piece of sand or grit that gets stuck inside its shell. The coating keeps the particle from irritating the mollusk. The longer the pearl is inside the mollusk the bigger the pearl becomes. The most precious pearls are perfectly round and smooth, but pearls come in many shapes and colors; each with its own unique beauty! Since pearls are made by mollusks and not shaped by people, each one is unique. The pearl is associated with modesty, chastity and purity. So in honor of all my friends and followers who were born in June, here is a collection of beautiful Etsy pearls! Enjoy! :)
